Candidate Evaluation Guide

Effective candidate evaluation is critical to hiring the right talent. This guide provides a structured framework for assessing candidates consistently and objectively across all interviews for the same position.

Why Structured Evaluation Matters

βœ“ Consistency: Same criteria applied to all candidates eliminates bias

βœ“ Objectivity: Documented scoring supports hiring decisions and legal compliance

βœ“ Quality Hires: Comprehensive assessment identifies candidates most likely to succeed

βœ“ Team Alignment: Multiple interviewers evaluate using identical framework

βœ“ Documentation: Written feedback protects against future disputes

Best Practices for Candidate Evaluation

Before the Interview

1. Identify Core Competencies
Define the 3-5 most critical skills and traits for this role. Not all evaluation criteria matter equally. Rank them by importance.

2. Use Consistent Criteria
Evaluate all candidates for the same position using identical criteria. Different criteria creates bias and legal risk.

3. Prepare Structured Questions
Ask all candidates similar questions to gather comparable data. Use behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time...") rather than hypothetical ones ("What would you do if...").

4. Multiple Interviewers
Have 2-3 interviewers assess each candidate independently. Compare evaluations to identify consensus and outliers.

During the Interview

Take Notes, Don't Rate
Document specific examples and behaviors during the interview. DO NOT complete evaluation scoring during or in front of the candidate. This protects against bias and legal liability.

Listen for Evidence
Look for concrete examples, not generic answers. A candidate saying "I'm a great problem solver" means nothing. Ask them to describe a specific problem they solved and their approach.

Watch Body Language
Enthusiasm, engagement, posture, and communication style matter. Does the candidate maintain eye contact? Do they ask thoughtful questions? Do they seem genuinely interested?

Customizing Your Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation tool comes with 11 standard criteria, but you can customize them to match your specific needs:

β€’ Go to the Settings tab to add, edit, or remove criteria

β€’ Adapt criterion names and descriptions to match your role and culture

β€’ Save multiple configurations for different job types

β€’ Reset to defaults anytime if you want to start over

Common Evaluation Mistakes

❌ Don't:

Rate candidates during interview or in their presence

Use different criteria for different candidates

Rate based on personality chemistry alone

Rush evaluationβ€”wait until after reflection

Let one trait drive overall score

Base score on first impression (halo effect)

βœ“ Do:

Complete evaluation after interview reflection

Use consistent criteria for all candidates

Ground scores in specific examples

Take detailed notes during interview

Consider all criteria independently

Compare evaluations across multiple interviewers
